About Me
I'm a mother of 1. 1 Beautiful little girl who has me wrapped around her little finger. I love horror movies and make-up. I've been going to The Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire for the last 16 years. Only missed one year, when I was 8 months pregnant. I love anything to do with The Tudor Family. It's a bit of an obsession. I also love musical theatre and Cold Stone.
Music
80's new wave. I love the Smiths and the Cure. Irish folk music. Old school underground hip hop (tribe called quest, J5), Steely Dan, Allison Kraus and Union Station. I love love love bluegrass (which is so strange since I am of the grunge rock era.) And I LOVE Dropkick Murpheys and Rob Zombie (another one of those sick little obsessions of mine).
Movies
Elizabeth, Chocolat, Pretty in Pink, I love all horror (and I mean ALL), Braveheart, Sweeny Todd, The Nightmare Before Christmas
TV
The Tudors, Two and a Half Men, Dexter, Greys Annotomy, The X-Files (it will always be my favorite) Californication (do you see a pattern here?) No Reservations (I just love Anthony Bourdain).
Books
I adore Gregory Maguire. I read Wicked way before it was ever a musical (and now it's one of my favorite musicals as well) Mirror Mirror, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, The Red Tent, The Other Bolyne girl (I have yet to see the movie, I'm afraid it won't do it justice) The Descent by Jeff Long (incredible book)
Likes
Obviously the Ren Faire (or I wouldn't be here), Being a mom (these are more like loves than likes), Making jewelry and some of my faire garbe, knitting, cooking, reading, doing make-up (been a make-up artist for 10 years now), ballet and belly dancing (great for keeping in shape and taking off baby weight), Musical Theatre (once upon a time in a land far away I was a musical theatre major with an instrumental performance minor at Missouri State University), playing flute for my daughter (she's one of the few who still finds it entertaining), Anthony Bourdain, Snake Bites (half Guiness half Pear Cider), I like that I have entirely too much knowledge about coffee (my aunt was a coffee roaster and I would spend my summers with her learning about the art of the perfect coffee bean), learning about my lineage (my family has a fifth generation farm in rural missouri with ALOT of history attatched to it), Anything Irish or Scottish, Men in kilts
Dislikes
That I never finished getting my degree and that I'm not on Broadway (or even off Broadway). People who pretend to be your friend to your face, but say nasty, untruthful things about you behind your back, not enough sleep, spiders and silverfish
Vices
Non-fat lattes, a great glass of pinot grigio, great beers (only on occasion though), black raspberry ice cream with dark chocolate chunks, Anthony Bourdain, David Duchovney and Rob Zombie
Virtues
hmmm....loyalty, truthfulness, and the fact that I can still love my crazy dog even after he has destroyed hundreds of dollars worth of shoes, chewed holes through walls and peed on my Juicy Couture baby bag.
Heroes
My grandmothers...the most amazing and inspirational women I have ever known.
On wednesday evening, I competed for a chance to become part of the Los Angeles cast of Wicked. I worked really hard and put together an amazing rendition of The Wizard and I and then the moment I walked up on stage, all composed thought flew straight out of my head. I still gave it my all, pulled my heart out of my chest and left it sitting on that stage. And to my dismay, I will not be in the show (some other talentless hack was chosen, although he will be competing against someone else with an amazing voice who absolutely deserved to be there, so good luck buddy..I'm not bitter or anything.) The point of all of this is it took me 8 years to try it all over again, and first and foremost I made it into the top 50 (out of over 1000 entries) and I was able to perform again like the last time I had done it was yesterday. One of the judges told me I had an "enchanting disney voice, like I was one of thier animated characters". So maybe that's where I'll go from here. Goodbye Wicked Witch of the West, I'll miss you, hello Cinderella, glad to make your acquaintance. (oh..and if anyone's interested in actually watching my performance, it's on youtube. Look for Wanna be wicked..)
Oh, Oh, how I pray for crappy weather this weekend. Last weekend was fun and wonderful. Full of great friends and family, beautiful wares, fabulous food (sin on a stick), never empty cups of ale, and a great number of men in kilts, BUT...it was hotter than hell. Wearing literally 4 layers of clothing last weekend was, for the first time ever, absolutely no fun. Everything else was great, except for the 102 degree heat in the middle of the desert. So please, if you read this, pray, do alittle chant, cast a little spell, sacrifice a little something to the gods, whatever it is that you do, help us have a bit breezier, a lot cooler, and a little less sun filled day at faire this weekend. I will do what it is that I do to make things happen in life, but I'm not exactly willing to go in the buff. I'm damned determined to have a good weekend, but if it's as hot this weekend as it was last weekend, my faire persona may be changed from an Irish lass to one of the fae (and I'm sort of wingless at the moment, so I'm not sure how I'd pull that off.) So with that said, a toast to good weather and a healthy weekend...SLÁINTE!
